Shadow Mario receives damage based on droplets hitting his hitbox, which can be a bit deceiving at times. Things you may be experiencing:

• While true that spam sprays are optimal for killing Shadow Mario, due to the quantity of water released, this is only true if you are VERY close to him - otherwise they spread out so quickly that almost nothing hits him.
• Shadow Mario's hitbox is frankly, hard to aim at. If you want to deal maximum damage it is ideal to aim for Shadow Mario's feet as this will ensure no water is overshooting. Be aware of the distance between you and Shadow Mario, as this is the most reliable way to aim for him while chasing him. If he is on a downward slope notice how you have to spray from farther away to actually hit his feet.
• Shadow Mario can't die if he is standing still. He must be actively on the run for your water to cause the finishing blow - so if he is at 0HP he will not take damage or acknowledge your water.
