"Super Mario 3D All-Stars" was released on September 18, 2020.

This article summarizes the differences in running an RTA of Super Mario Sunshine, as included in the 3D All-Stars collection, compared to the original GameCube (GC) version.

Load Time Differences

The biggest factor when changing hardware is the load times.

I tested by booting the GC version of Sunshine on a Wii, and found that the Switch version is about 2 seconds faster during the loading screens after Shine selection and after collecting a Shine.

(Note: This was not tested in multiple locations, so depending on the stage and timing, the actual difference might vary.)

In minimum-clear runs where you collect 43 Shines (not including Bowser), this load time advantage adds up to nearly 1 minute and 30 seconds total, assuming 2 seconds per Shine.

Additionally, Shines with extra transitions after selection—such as stage changes in Pinna Park and Sirena Beach, and secret stages—will likely show even more time savings.

Lag / Frame Drops

On the GC version, lag commonly occurs during the Manta fight, Bowser fight, and the red coin mission in Pinna 3.

However, in the Switch version, these lag issues are mostly gone.

Bugs and Other Differences

Most of the bugs and techniques usable in the late-version GC builds are also usable on the Switch version.

However, one difference concerns the Big Boo (Boss Teresa) fight.

In the GC version, if you move to the center immediately after the fight starts, Boo appears more quickly.

This doesn’t work on the Switch version. (I haven’t confirmed whether this trick works in all GC versions either.)

This makes the GC version faster by 2–3 seconds here.
